Section 4.6.6 (page 85) of the November 1998 revision of RSX-11M/RSX-11S Release Notes contains guidance on how to determine appropriate values for disks of arbitrary size. I have paraphrased this information for the sake of brevity, if something is not clear please refer to the documentation itself.

To determine the maximum value for MAX:, follow these guidelines:

  • For disks up to 64MB in size, MAXIMUM FILES = ((N-(((N+4095.)/4096.)+9.))*127.)/258. where N is the size of your target disk
  • For disks from 64MB to 532MB, set MAX: to the number of blocks on disk divided by 16.
  • For disks larger than 532MB, set MAX: to 65500.

The value of HEA: is derived from the value of MAX:. In order to determine the maximum HEA: value for your disk, use the following guidelines:

MAX value ---------- disk size ---------- HEA value
<25588 ≤209MB MAX/2
≥25588 ^ ≤51176 210-419MB 25593
≥51176 ^ ≤51693 420-423MB 25846
≥51693 ^ ≤65500 ≥423MB 51693
